Preview- "Dehradun comprises of varied agro-climatic zones ranging from sub-tropical to high altitude cold deserts, which has a great potential for successful cultivation of wide range of agricultural and horticultural crops. The state is well known for its diversity with an estimated net sown area of 7,81,289 ha. Among total estimated net sown area, 56.8 per cent area is under hill regions while 43.2 per cent area is under plains. Agriculture including horticulture and animal husbandry is the backbone of Uttarakhand as more than 75% population is dependant on agriculture for their livelihood. However, agricultural crops, horticultural industries and livestock farming in Uttarakhand are confronted with the problem of low productivity and poor quality in comparison to national scenario. Dehradun district endowed with varying climatic conditions provide ample opportunity for the accelerated development of agriculture and its allied sectors. Since the last one decade considerable progress has been made but still lot of initiatives need to be taken in the district for commercialization and advancement in agriculture sector.
Keeping these facts in view and recognizing the vast potential and unlimited opportunities in the state, G. B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar has established Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Dehradun in December, 2004 in collaboration with Indian Council of Agricultural Research with an aim to promote and advance agriculture and its allied sectors in Dehradun district. The basic objectives of KVK Dehradun are to conduct demonstrations, assessment, refinement, validation, and training on technological advancement taking place in the field of agriculture to make it more viable and remunerative. In this direction, demonstration on farmers friendly technologies, to mobilize the farming community by the method of “learning by seeing” and “learning by doing” is one of the thrust area of this KVK in different fields of agriculture viz: crop production, vegetable production, protected cultivation of vegetables, technological intervention in enhancement of off season vegetables and spices production in mountain regions, fodder production, improvement in soil health by sensitizing the farmers towards soil testing and organic farming, soil and water conservation, nutrient management, promotion of short duration fruit crops, multiplication of quality planting material of commercially important crops, introduction of high yielding varieties and hybrids, integrated pest and disease management, judicious use of chemical pesticides to reduce the consumption of pesticides, demonstration of alternate strategies for pest and disease management, mechanization to reduce drudgery, backyard poultry farming, feeding and nutritional management of milch animals, breed improvement of local goats and introduction of piggery farming, nutritional garden to overcome malnutrition in the villages, value addition, processing, preservation, stitching and craft making, candle making, women empowerment through formation of SHGs, etc ."
